Rug Buying Guide

Choosing A New Area Rug?

One of the most common mistakes first-time rug buyers make is a choosing a rug that’s too small for their space. Remember, a rug isn’t a filler — it’s a focal point. A rug that’s too small will fit your room like an awkward pair of high waters. A rug that’s too big will look like a clumsy hand-me-down. Just like buying a new outfit, finding the right size rug is all about a comfortable fit.

STEP 1: CHOOSE A RUG STYLE

VINTAGE

Vintage and vintage-style rugs are trending in a big way. From traditionally styled homes to hip bohemian lofts, vintage rugs are making a statement. However, if you're looking for a quality rug that has the allure of an antique to add interest and style to your space, a distressed traditional-style rug is an excellent, budget-friendly option.

CONTEMPORARY

The landscape of contemporary design shifts often, but true contemporary style takes on a softer appearance than the stark lines of modern design. In addition to sporting popular patterns like trellis, chevron, abstract, and graphic prints, contemporary rugs often reinvent traditional motifs by changing the scale of the pattern or updating the color palette.

TRANSITIONAL

Transitional style falls directly between traditional and contemporary design. Incorporating both classic and updated design elements, transitional rugs are simple yet sophisticated with muted color palettes and updated traditional patterns like distressed oriental motifs or large-scale vines and scrollwork.

STEP 2: CHOOSE RUG SIZES AND SHAPES

LIVING ROOM AREA RUG

SECTIONAL SOFA
RUG SIZE: 9’ x 12’

LOVESEAT + ARMCHAIR
RUG SIZE: 5’ x 8’

SOFA + LOVESEAT + ARMCHAIR
RUG SIZE: 10’ x 14’

A popular layout is to place your furniture so that the front two legs of each sofa or chair sit on the rug. For a larger room, you can opt for a rug that is large enough to contain all four legs of any sofas, chairs, coffee tables or side tables. A rug should help define and accent the space, not look like wall- to-wall carpeting. Leave at least one foot of exposed floor space between the rug and walls.

DINING ROOM AREA RUG

72’’ TABLE, SEATS 8 PEOPLE
RUG SIZE: 8’ x 10’

48’’ TABLE, SEATS 4 PEOPLE
RUG SIZE: 6’ ROUND

60’’ TABLE, SEATS 6 PEOPLE
RUG SIZE: 9’ x 12’

Choose a rug that is large enough to fit all four chair legs, even when the chairs are pulled out. You'll want to leave at least 24" of room between the backs of the chairs and the edges of the rug. Consider if the table has extending leaves. If so, you'll want to choose a rug size that can accommodate the table with or without them.

BEDROOM AREA RUG

KING SIZE BED
RUG SIZE: 2.5’ x 9’

QUEEN SIZE BED
RUG SIZE: 8’ x 10’

KING SIZE BED
RUG SIZE: 3’ x 5’

Use an area rug to make the bed the focal point of the bedroom. Measure the space for a rug that extends 2 feet to each side of the bed, unless it’s on a wall. Don’t be afraid to layer rugs. Another option is to use a runner along each side of the bed — on hard floors or on top of existing carpeting — to create a soft, warm place for your feet in the morning.

STEP 3: MAINTENANCE

Remember to Purchase Rug Pad

Rug pads keep your rug properly positioned, preventing it from slipping. Rug pads also reduce wear and tear on the rug. It help to absorb the impact of feet and noise and make vacuuming easier. Rug pad Protect smooth-surface flooring, like hardwood and laminate, from being scratched by the back of the rug. For rugs placed over carpet, use carpet tape or a rug pad. When choosing a pad, look for thin polyester fabric coated with adhesive.

Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuuming: is the most important way to care for your rugs. Not only does vacuuming remove surface dirt and debris, it also removes soil that has worked its way down into the rug fibers. Spot
Cleaning: Scrub the stains with a soft brush dipped in soapy water. Rinse with clear water. - Place towel over the wet area. Blot the cleaned spot as dry as possible. - Use a portable fan or hair dryer to speed drying.
